We have two Compaq Armada 4130T laptop computers with 28.8K modem cards. We take the laptop ashore and arrange for an Internet hookup (a lot harder than it sounds). We’ve been pretty lucky in the following places: Bermuda, BVI, Antigua, Martinique, Grenada, Isla Margarita, Aruba, Panama, Tahiti, Tonga, Fiji, Vanuatu, Solomons, and Australia. Forget about the Galapagos Islands, Marquesas, and Tuamotus. But, by the time you read this, that may have changed. You may ask, “Boys, why didn’t you go with one of those spiffy satellite jobs or SSB gizmos?”. To which we would reply, “When we left the States in 1996, the costs of transmitting and receiving messages would drain money from our account quicker than a Vegas gambler with an addiction to black jack and Chivas”. Well , we finally broke down and got a PinOak SSB Email system. Our friend Jamie brought down all the equipment to Darwin, Australia when he came to visit. We’ve had some trouble with it, most notably poor coverage across the Indian Ocean. It seems to work when it feels in the mood and at others times, we want to throw it overboard... |
